Horseshoe Bat

All of the 69 species of horseshoe bats occur in tropical and temperate regions including Australia. The nose has a bizarre hollow together with projections shaped as spears, leaves or horseshoes. There are used to aid in echolocation and guide sounds into their large ears. Ears feature a fold in from of the auditory canal called the tragis. These are the most primitive of the insectivous micro bats. Like all bats, they are nocturnal and may eat their bodyweight in insects each night including snatching spiders from their webs.
